Project Description

Atherton Tablelands

The Atherton Tableland is a fertile plateau located west inland from Cairns. This area is definitely worth a visit because there are a lot of natural wonders such as Chillagoe Caves, Curtain Fig Tree and Lake Tinaroo. Atherton and Mareeba are the largest towns.

Atherton is the centre of Atherton Tableland and is about 90 km from Holloways Beach. If you want to make a day trip from Cairns Beach Resort you can choose to go to the northern part, the centre or the southern part of Atherton Tableland.

Atherton tablelands – North

View the amazing Barron Falls in Kuranda. Discover clear-flowing creeks, long-lost timber history and towering giants along the Clohesy River Road and picnic beside placid pools. Enjoy your icecream at Emerald Creek Ice-Creamery and have coffee and chocolate at Coffee Works in Mareeba. Feed wallabies and go for a little hike at Granite Gorge Nature Park.

Atherton tablelands – Centre

Try to fit Curtain Fig Tree all into your camera lens. Glide your canoe or kayak over the waters of lakes Eacham and Barrine. Climb Bartle Frere, Queensland’s highest peak. Search for tree-kangaroos and immerse yourself in Ngadjon-Jii culture on the Tulip Oak walk. Form your own theory on how the Mobo Creek Crater was formed. Be amazed by the giant Cathedral Fig Tree. Taste cheese at Gallo Dairyland and go swimming, paddling, skiing, fishing or boating on the waters of Lake Tinaroo.

Hallorans Hill, walk high above the surrounding landscape through endangered rainforest atop a volcanic cone. Explore the trails at the Atherton Forest Mountain Bike Park on your bike. Enjoy the history and culture of the area along the Wongabel Heritage walk. Grab your binoculars and search Hasties Swamp for some of the 220 resident and migratory bird species.

Atherton tablelands – South

Cool off in the spray from McKenzie Falls in Tumoulin State Forest. Spot possums, tree kangaroos, spiders and insects at Mount Hypipamee. See how the Australian Army soldiers lived, trained and played at Millstream Falls.

Marvel at the Tully Falls as they thunder past on their way down the gorge (but only in the wet season). Explore the Misty Mountains wilderness tracks (this can take a few days). Don’t forget to go to Koombooloomba Dam while you’re in the southern part of Atherton Tableland.
